Wau




The Wau bulan kite is a typical Malaysian kite.  The one layer of paper sail is richly decorated with colourful patterns of flowers and leaves. The patterns are meticulously cut from rice-paper and glued on piece by piece. The framework is made from split bamboo that was soaked in mud for two weeks ( to make it ore flexible and to prevent attacks of weevil). The normally attached hummer give a constant noise
The Wau is also one of the Malaysia's national symbols; We noticed it on the Logo of the Malaysia Airlines, on the one ringgit banknote and on the reverse side of the fifty-cent coin and at the central market of KL.


Types:
The Wau Bulan; Moon kite
The Wau Kucing; Cat kite with a high-pitched sound - like a cat’s mew. The hummer was used to scare away evil spirits and predict the following day’s weather.
The Wau Merak; Peacock kite. The design consists of a “balong” (fowl’s crest) and the a tail that can be four times the size of its body.

iFlite blue




A new iFlite added to my collection. It's my understanding that it is made on the same frame as the original iFlite but the polyetheylene skin is just slightly lighter than the white skin,. (How much I do not know). Patrick told me at the Borneo kite festival (Bintulu) that this one was to hard to make so it will never go in full production. I am happy with this unique ultra light iFlite kite.

Coming Art 2012

Bert Maetens

Zijn professionele leven spendeert hij in een strak maatpak, zoekend naar creatieve oplossingen voor complexe IT-problemen om die dan te verkopen aan multinationals. Tijdens zijn vrije tijd daarentegen, ontpopt hij zich tot een "echte" stadsvliegeraar.
Het verhaal begon zo'n vijftien jaar geleden in Berkeley Marina, een prachtig park in San Francisco.
Dagelijks worden hier ontelbare vliegertjes opgelaten tegen de skyline van de stad. De blijheid en de glimlachen op de gezichten van de bijhorende families gaven Bert al snel het gevoel dat dit vliegeren wel eens zeer diepe voldoening en rust zou kunnen geven.
Hier wilde hij bijhoren. Dit wilde hij ervaren.
Na een tijdje ontdekte hij dat vliegeren een universele bezigheid is waar in elke cultuur een andere betekenis aan gekoppeld wordt. In Guatemala bijvoorbeeld, worden kites opgelaten om de doden te vereren. In Afrika doet men aan kitevissen en in China laat men vliegers in de lucht wanneer er feest gevierd wordt. In Europa dienen ze als oorlosinstrumenten en in Japan en Afghanistan zijn kites het symbool van respectievelijk cultuur en gevechtsport.
Voor Coming Art stelt Bert Maetens kites tentoon. Kites spreken tot de verbeelding. Je vindt er cultuur, kleurenpaletten en creativiteit in terug. Je herkent het blauw van de lucht als achtergrond van sommige kites. En natuurlijk zijn ook aerodynamica en natuurelementen aspecten die je terug kan vinden.
Als tweede pijler van zijn werk voegt hij fotografie toe. De vliegers zijn hier nog steeds aanwezig, maar nu portreteert hij de wereld vanuit het perspectief van de kite. Dit geeft adembenemende beelden, beelden die niet gezien kunnen worden vanuit een vliegtuig.
Een andere kijk op de wereld zeg maar. Een nieuw perspectief.

Tyne Cot Cemetery

Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest British military cemetery on the European continent. This impressive cemetery contains almost 12,000 tombstones. The rear of Tyne Cot consists of a wall with 35,000 names of missing soldiers and is the sequel of the Menen poort.

Holy Fox

A first picture of my new holy Fox.  
A high wind kite design for KAP  from Nicolas Chorier. It's a design with a lot of potential. 
I was happy with the first flight in 40km/h wind.

Floating boat pool

Antwerp's new luxury "movable" floating swimming pool. The bathing boat is 120 meters long and should have a capacity of up to 600 people. In wintertime the pool will be used for ice skating.. can you imagine! The badboat was designed by architect Pieter Peerlings and Silvia Mertens!.Sculp (IT) architecten.
Grant opening is one of these days....
